As the ideas for rebuilding Penn Station were being developed, one of the most frequently asked questions was what to do about the current Madison Square Garden. The garden has already moved four times in its history, and its current location directly above the train tracks is incompatible with any good solution to Penn Station. While we eventually identified a number of potential sites for a new Madison Square Garden, the one with the most potential is clearly at the corner of Broadway and 34th Street.
Stanford White’s Madison Square Garden was a triumph of architectural style and modern entertainment at its completion in 1890. Its dominant features on Madison Square Park were the glorious roof garden and the belvedere tower crowned by the Augustus St. Gaudens figure of Diana.
RWC Atelier & Co’s proposal is to build a modern arena and entertainment complex on the site of Herald and Greeley Square with an operable roof dome and roof garden and a belvedere tower inspired by White’s extraordinary building, and to crown it with a replica of the original statue of Diana.
